After researching different political topics and developing opinions, we put on our third exhibition of the year called "Rile 'Em Up". Everyone had to choose a political topic and I chose the captivity of orcas in entertainment parks. A list was created with all the tasks we had to complete before exhibition. We had to annotate ten articles, a political essay with critiques, a stencil, stencil artist statement, alternate art piece, art piece artist statement, an alternate identity biography, and biography photo. Once we completed the list, it was time to prepare ourselves for exhibition.
Everyone in the class had critique groups to critique all the work they had done so far. My critique group consisted of Natalie Au, Annette Garcia, and Deme Thornton. It was somewhat helpful to get critique, but it wasn't as helpful as it should've been. The groups weren't very effective and were set up in a way that we couldn't get specific critique for items we needed critique on. It could've been more helpful if we looked at one item at a time and not all the work as a whole, that way we can improve on everything instead of getting vague critique one a few things.
During this project, I completed all the items on the list while having extra time to work on my butterfly in Physics and my CD in Multimedia. I learned many different techniques when it came to spray painting my stencil art. Going on the field trip to Writerz Blok really helped me when it came to using spray paint. I think I could've improved by making a stencil that was more creative, but I think it turned out very well for what I made it to be. During this project, I learned much about my topic of orcas in captivity. For example, the dorsal fin of the orcas are flopped over in captivity because of malnutrition or sickness. Also, there are currently fifty-four orcas in captivity around the world. I feel that during this project I learned lots of new information about my topic and the topics of other students.
Many things went really well in this project, like completing all my work a few days before exhibition to fix anything I needed to fix. The one item that I am most proud of is my alternate art piece because I feel I was really creative in the choice of mediums: painting and clay. I first painted the picture of a baby orca being taken away from its mother and then I highlighted the most important parts with the clay. I feel it came out really well, it looks professional and is very neat. Overall, I think everything went well for the humanities portion of this project, but I'm most proud of my art piece.
I had struggles with my stencil by how creative it was and the process of cutting out the stencil. My stencil kept ripping while I was cutting it out and I would have to keep taping it. I fixed this problem by taping all the places I thought might rip which helped when I was cutting out the stencil. After I spray painted my stencil onto a board, I kept thinking of ways to make it better so I tried adding water to make the orca seem like it's in water. That didn't work out very well because there was blue paint outside of the tank and on the black parts of my stencil. I fixed it by painting over most of the blue and tried to make it look as nice as possible. Although, in the end there was still some blue paint on the outside since I couldn't find a white enough paint.
Concerning work ethic, I think I worked diligently and managed my time efficiently. I finished all my work early and in the spare time, I found other things I could work on like fixing up my binder and fixing anything else that needed work. Something I could work on is staying organized because while I was working I would place my work in odd areas and sometimes I would lose them. When I lost them it would throw me into a panic, but once I found it I would calm down. Also, my binder was very disorganized when I put it together, up until the day before exhibition when I tidied it up and made it look professional.
I would change this project by having a smaller amount of work or more time because there was a lot of work to do on the humanities side. This would make students stress out and rush to complete the work, which made it look less professional. By having more time or a smaller amount of work, I feel we could make our project the best it could be and make it look as professional as possible. Otherwise, I enjoyed this project because it was really hands on and I had fun with it.
