The humanities aspect of this project focused on the social issues that are happening in today's society. Leading up to the exhibition, we learned about segregation, income inequalities, education inequalities, gender inequalities, Islamophobia, and a few others. These topics opened up our minds and introduced us to this project. I knew about some of these topics, but I didn't realize how serious they were until we looked further into these issues. The next step was to form groups for the Symposium. There were event organizers, publishers, fundraisers, panelists plus moderators, graphic analysts and statisticians, media, and spoken word speakers. I was a panelist and my panel focused on the issue of gender inequality. Before being put into this group, I knew very little about gender inequality. I knew it was there, but I didn't know how much women were affected. The main purpose of bringing awareness to these issues was to look into the privileges of the people in our society and dive deeper into the idea of the American Dream. I learned so much more than I thought I would because everyone is affected by these issues and people have different privileges than others. It was eye opening for me to see how no one is truly equal. Everyone has different privileges whether it is financial or personal. There are inequities everywhere and in every system such as in education and genders. At the beginning of this project, I believed that the American Dream was about achieving goals and aspirations, and after this project, I still believe in this. My view hasn't changed, it has been intensified because if you want to truly achieve the American Dream, you must do so willingly since everyone's dream is different.
In humanities, we wrote position papers about a topic that we chose. My position paper is about gender inequality and how many women are unequal in the United States. To view my position paper, click the button below.
For the Symposium, panelists to write an opening statement to introduce their views and opinions. Gender inequality is a large topic, so I focused on the sexualization of women in the media while my other panel members focused on other topics such as inequality in the workplace, lack of women in positions of power, transgender women, and men inequality.
