Career Day - 9th Grade
a) What category did you get on your career survey? Is it accurate why/why not?
On my career survey, I got a four-way tie. My careers were Agricultural, Food & Natural Resources (plants), Arts, Audio-Video Technology & Communications, Hospitality & Tourism, and Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. In a sense, all of these are accurate about me. I am very interested in the outdoors, particularly in nature, which goes under the Agricultural career. I am very artistic, whether it comes to art or photography which would qualify for the Arts career. I do like to travel and try new things, so I could recommend places to people and this would go under the Hospitality career. Finally, I am very interested in natural disasters and what cause them, so that would be coming from the Science career. This survey was very accurate because it depicts what I am interested in and the variety of choices that I will be able to have.
b) What are your expectations for career day? What do you hope to get out of it? What are you afraid of?
I expect career day to be enjoyable if I find the right career to shadow and I also expect it to help me decide my own career. I hope that it will either cancel out careers that I would not be interested in or open up new careers that I never thought of before. I am afraid that I will not get anything out of this day. Afraid that it will not cancel or open other careers. I am also afraid that it will show me that I am not fit for a career that I was interested in in the first place.

Career Day Reflection
At HTHNC, there is a day set aside for the purpose of shadowing someone at their job. This day is called Career Day. For Career Day, students must contact someone who is in a field of work the student is interested in and shadow them throughout Career Day. The purpose of this day is to find different Careers that one is interested in and to rule out Careers that one thought they were interested in, then didn't enjoy it as much as they thought. I shadowed Patty Schreibman who works at Vulcan Materials. She oversees different real estate for the large construction materials company. She creates a land use plan for how it will be developed deciding where homes, offices, hotels, shops, parks, roads, recreation etc. will go. Patty works with engineers, planners, and architects who all act as part of a team to come up with a final design. She also works a lot with City Staff and politicians to process the approvals for the project. I, along with Emily, went to her office, a mining site, an unfinished project and a finished project.
