For this problem, we had to estimate the amount of people at Obama's inauguration in 2009. We looked at a satellite image of Obama's inauguration and circled the crowds of people at the event. There were a total of nine circles on the image, and they were numbered so our group could keep track and stay organized.
By figuring out the radius of the estimated circle, we were able to find out the area and estimate that every one person can stand in a 1 foot by 1 foot square (if it were crowded). The area of the circle was converted into feet and we found the distance between the World War II Memorial and the Capitol Building. On the poster there is a chart showing the conversions from inches to miles for the radius and then converted into the area of the circle. Using the amount of feet used in each circle we were able to estimate the amount of people.
Estimate: 5,768,040 people at Obama's inauguration
The estimate does seem a little too high to be the actually amount of people, but we considered only if it was crowded. Out estimate left no personal space for anyone, so next time it would have been better to have one person every two by two square foot. This scale would leave room for people and also would give a more reasonable estimate.
